Hobart, one of five international Antarctic gateway cities, regularly welcomes international Antarctic delegations and celebrates being a centre of knowledge, with the highest concentration of Antarctic scientists of any capital city in Australia.
City assets greatly assist in attracting Antarctic personnel including Hobart’s outstanding natural environment, recreational spaces, arts and culture, renowned fresh produce, boutique beverages and weekly Salamanca Market.
Great effort ensures that Hobart is welcoming, engaging and clean; offering varied activities and events throughout the year including Hobart’s Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery’s permanent display ‘Islands to Ice’; and biennial week-long Antarctic Festival.
In addition to numerous references to Antarctica within the cityscape, each October the City lights up Hobart blue and flies street banners in acknowledgement of the huge importance it places on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. The Opening of the Antarctic Season Reception is hosted by the City for members of the local, national and international Antarctic community, offering a much anticipated opportunity for people from many nations and organisations to come together.
The City of Hobart also provides support by contributing expertise to sector policy, funding for Antarctic projects, promotion of the sector and warmest welcome for visiting international Antarctic delegations, vessels and crew.
