CARMM Chair
The Centre for Antarctic, Remote and Maritime Medicine (CARMM) is leader and partner of choice in Healthcare in Remote and Extreme Environments (HREE) in Australia and internationally.
The unique combination of expertise from the Australian Antarctic Division, Tasmanian Government (Department’s of Health and State Growth) and the University of Tasmania delivers exceptional outcomes in Antarctic, remote, maritime and space medicine.
Established in 2019, CARMM is a collaborative centre of excellence working across four key areas;
• Clinical – Medical facility design and support, medical screening, Antarctic telehealth support and case management, including Antarctic and maritime medevacs, and access to diving and hyperbaric/hypobaric chamber and medical expertise.
• Education – Academic pathways in HREE from short courses and graduate certificates, to Diplomas, Masters degrees and PhD awards.
• Vocational Training – Accredited on-the-job training for Australian rural generalists and specialist health professionals, with skills applicable to extreme and remote medical practice.
• Research and Innovation – Across human biology, psychology and physiology in the extreme environments of Antarctica, utilising Antarctica as a space analog.
CARMM is based in the Australian Antarctic Gateway city of Hobart, Tasmania.
